PUEBLO, Colo. (January 22, 2008) - Professional Bull Riders' (PBR) administration today announced the first official 'cut' of the 2008 season. The purpose of the cut is to determine which 45 bull riders will be competing on the elite Built Ford Tough Series presented by Wrangler (BFTS). Upon the conclusion of every fifth BFTS tour stop the lowest ranked riders in the BFTS point standings are subject to the cut. They are dropped from the tour and replaced by the top five riders in the Copenhagen Bull Riding Challenger tour standings. Money earned at all lower level PBR tours - Copenhagen Bull Riding Tour, Enterprise Rent-A-Car Tour, Discovery tour and international tours - counts toward earning a spot among the 45 best bull riding athletes in the PBR. All 2007 PBR Built Ford Tough World Finals presented by Wrangler qualifiers receive five BFTS events before they are subject to the cut.

The riders who were dropped from the tour following the Sacramento Classic in Sacramento, Calif. are Beau Hill (Columbia Falls, Mont.), Harve Stewart (Stephenville, Texas), Austin Meier (Kinta, Okla.), Silvanei Dias (Populina, Sao Paulo, Brazil), Jared Farley (Kempsey, Australia), Cole Taylor (Sayre, Okla.), Mark Lopes (Jackson, Calif.), Ned Cross (Midland, Ore.) and Davey Dyke (Fremont, Iowa).

The following riders, all of whom have been out of competition due to injury, will be subject to the cut after they have competed in five tour stops: Clayton Williams (Carthage, Texas) with two events remaining, Scott Schiffner (Strathmore, AB, Canada) with one event remaining, Billy Robinson (Galax, Va.) with one event remaining and Michael Riggs (Claxton, Ga.) with one event remaining due to their respective injuries. All 2008 PBR Built Ford Tough World Finals presented by Wrangler qualifiers receive five BFTS events before they are subject to the cut.

The top five athletes who will advance to the BFTS by virtue of their achievements at the Copenhagen Bull Riding Tour level are: 1. Tyler Pankewitz (Warburg, AB, Canada) $19,139; 2. Vince Northrup (Davidson, SK, Canada) $16,553; 3. Jimmy Lathero (Fellsmere, Fla.) $15,560; 4. D.J. Domangue (Shriever, La.) $14,406; 5. Cole Taylor (Sayre, Okla.) $13,586.

The roster for the 2008 Built Ford Tough World Finals is determined according to total money won in the PBR. All tour alternates currently qualify to replace injured riders based upon their combined earnings from 2007 and 2008 in the Copenhagen Bull Riding Challenger Tour standings through the first 10 events. The next cut will be after the Baltimore, MD BFTS event on March 1-2, 2008.

About PBR:

FRESNO, Calif. (January 19, 2008) - Stop number four on the Professional Bull Rider’s (PBR) Built Ford Tough Series presented by Wrangler (BFTS) treated a sell-out crowd at Fresno, Calif.’s Save Mart Center to a history breaking evening when Travis Briscoe (Edgewood, N.M.) claimed the first ever winner take-all format event. In claiming the Table Mountain Casino Invitational event title, Briscoe earned his third career BFTS victory, back to back event titles, and added $105,000 to his PBR career earnings.

“It’s pretty awesome to win $105,000 in one night,” said Briscoe following the win. “My first [BFTS] event win was here in 2006 but I missed the event in 2007. I’m happy I could come back and win Fresno this year. This is definitely my favorite [BFTS] event!”

Briscoe scored 87.75 points in the first round of the Table Mountain Casino Invitational aboard Homestead Genetics’ Jack Rabbit. The score was enough for fifth place going into the Built Ford Tough Championship Round. He trailed round winner Jason Bennett (Honeygrove, Texas), by three points; Bennett covered Tim Hopkins’ Rudolph for 90.75 points. By virtue of the round win, Bennett will be eligible to ride for the $5,000 Enterprise Rent-A-Car “Ride with the Best” Bonus in Sacramento on Saturday night.

Ironically, Briscoe suffered a strained groin earlier in the week during a Copenhagen Bull Riding Challenger Tour event in Denver, Colo. and was questionable to compete in the Built Ford Tough Championship Round.

“I got on a really great bull in the first round [in Fresno] but felt I strained my groin again during the ride,” said Briscoe. “But after I looked at the draw [for the Built Ford Tough Championship Round] I knew I didn’t have a choice but to get on another great bull.”

The decision was definitely a lucrative one as Briscoe scored 89.5 points aboard Priest Creek Ranch’s 3 Spot in the final round. Although six men made qualified rides during the Built Ford Tough Championship Round, Briscoe was able to hold on for the event victory with 177.25 points on two bulls.

With back to back wins (Fresno and last weekend in Worcester, Mass.), Briscoe has quickly amassed $145,683.67 in season earnings. Impressively he has ridden 11 of the 12 bulls he has faced to date on the elite BFTS tour. He also maintains the top spot in the race for the 2008 PBR World Championship by more than 587 points over Kody Lostroh (Longmont, Colo.).

“I have to praise God,” finished Briscoe. “I couldn’t do it without Him.”

Three-time PBR World Champion, Adriano Moraes (Cachoeira Paulista, SP, BZ) made the most of his final appearance in Fresno, Calif. by claiming second place in the event with 175.5 total points. Earlier this month in New York City, Moraes announced his plan to retire at the conclusion of the 2008 BFTS season. Greg Potter (Queensland, AU) held down third place in the event with 175 points on two bulls.

Don’t miss the heart pounding action on NBC tomorrow, Saturday, January 19. Local times will vary so please check your local listings for complete broadcast information.

Stop no. 5 on the elite BFTS circuit will kick off Saturday night from ARCO Arena in Sacramento, Calif. with the Sacramento Classic. The event will air LIVE on VERSUS at 9 p.m. ET Saturday, January 19 and on Sunday, January 20 at 9 p.m. ET. Please check your local listings for additional television information.

The grueling week-in and week-out schedule of the PBR’s Built Ford Tough Series presented by Wrangler will thrill a different city every weekend from now through May 3rd. All of the breathtaking rides and daunting wrecks will air on VERSUS each Saturday and Sunday evening. Be sure to check www.pbrnow.com for upcoming cities, ticket information and complete broadcast times.

BEHIND THE CHUTES:
Enterprise Rent-A-Car's "Ride with the Best" Bonus:
As the winner of the third round of the Worcester Classic last weekend, Kody Lostroh (Longmont, Colo.) was eligible for the Enterprise Rent-A-Car "Ride with the Best" bonus money on Friday night in Fresno. Lostroh made a qualified ride aboard Sis & Stan’s Bucking Bulls’ Mr. Universe, claiming the $5,000 bonus. As the Table Mountain Casino Invitational first round winner, Jason Bennett (Honeygrove, Texas) is eligible to compete for the Enterprise Rent-A-Car “Ride with the Best” bonus money on Saturday at the Sacramento Classic.

Ford Truck Moment of Truth Bonus:
Jason Bennett (Honeygrove, Texas) led the event going into the Built Ford Tough Championship Round but did not win the Table Mountain Casino Invitational event title; therefore he did not claim the $20,000 Ford Truck Moment of Truth bonus. The bonus will grow to $25,000 at the Sacramento Classic in Sacramento, Calif. The bonus grows by $5,000 each week if it is not claimed. Once claimed, it returns to $5,000.

Ford Super Duty Challenge:
As the Table Mountain Casino Invitational event winner, Travis Briscoe (Edgewood, N.M.) has qualified for a chance to compete at the PBR Built Ford Tough World Finals, against all other 2008 Built Ford Tough Series event winners, for $50,000 toward the purchase of a 2009 Ford Super Duty Truck. The Ford Super Duty Challenge contestant who finishes the highest in the event aggregate during the 2008 PBR Built Ford Tough World Finals will win the Ford Super Duty Challenge.

Salem NationaLease Bull of the Event:
Rez Boy owned by Corey & Horst Rodeo Co. Inc. was the high marked bull of the event with a score of 46.5 points, and was awarded $1,250 as a part of Salem NationaLease's exciting bonus program. The program awards $1,250 to the top bull of the event as determined by the PBR judges' bull scores.

Cabela's World's Foremost Ride:
Jason Bennett (Honeygrove, Texas) recorded the highest marked ride of the event when he topped Tim Hopkins’ Rudolph for 90.75 points during the first round of the Table Mountain Casino Invitational. In doing so, he earned a $1,000 bonus.

The rider who achieves the highest score at each BFTS regular season event, excluding the PBR World Finals receives a bonus of $1,000 for the accomplishment. The PBR athlete who achieves the highest marked qualifying ride during the entire 2008 BFTS regular season, excluding the PBR World Finals event will receive $25,000, while second and third place finishers will be awarded $10,000 and $5,000, respectively. The bull rider that achieves the highest marked ride through the course of the entire 2008 PBR BFTS World Finals will earn an additional $10,000.

Travis Briscoe (Edgewood, N.M.) has the highest marked ride of the season thus far with a 95 point ride aboard Chad Berger/Ryken/Larson’s Copperhead Slinger during the Built Ford Tough Championship Round of the Worcester, Mass. BFTS event.

Bullriding accident kills Alma teenager

by LAREIGN WARD, Press Argus-Courier Staff
Wednesday, January 16, 2008 10:27 AM CST

Funeral service for an Alma teenager will be held Thursday following his death Saturday from injuries suffered in a bullriding accident in Muskogee, Okla.

Peyton Douglas Jackson, 16, was competing in his second junior bullriding competition, his mom, Becky Jackson, said Tuesday.

"He was thrown from the bull and the bull stepped on his chest and it punctured both of his lungs, did some damage to his heart," Jackson said. "He didn't have a pulse. (Medical personnel) took him to (a) Muskogee hospital and tried to revive him but he was gone."

Jackson and her husband, Tom, were at the competition. Becky Jackson said she saw Peyton ride the bull but did not see the animal step on him.

"They had him on the stretcher; I could tell that his arms were limp," she said. "I assumed he was unconscious, but no, I didn't imagine anything that serious."

She said her only child was wearing all the proper protective gear and described his death as a "freak accident."

"I believe in my heart that he was gone when they put him in the ambulance, but they worked on him, tried to revive him in the ambulance," she said. While unsure of the exact time frame, Jackson said he was pronounced dead a few minutes after arriving at Muskogee Regional Medical Center.

Funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Living Word River Valley Church in Alma, with burial to follow in Evergreen Cemetery. Funeral director Carol Gaither of Ocker Funeral Home of Alma said Peyton's body was released from Muskogee Tuesday morning and taken to the funeral home.

Jackson said Peyton first became involved in the rodeo circuit about six months ago.

"There were some friends of his that were bareback riders; he had gone to a ride or two with them (and) he fell in love with it," she said. "He liked the danger of it, he liked the thrill of it and the excitement."

She and her husband made what she described as a "very prayerful decision" to let Peyton compete.

"It was what he wanted to do," Jackson said. "My husband and I, as his parents, we loved him and that was our job as parents to let him do what he wanted to do. We supported him."

She said her son was a "well-rounded kid" who enjoyed hunting, fishing and maintained a 3.5 grade point average at Alma High School, where he was in 10th grade.

Alma High School Principal Jerry Valentine said extra counselors were made available to the student body following Saturday's accident.

"He was an outstanding student, (an) outstanding young man and he loved to rodeo," Valentine said.

Peyton's classmates are attempting to raise money for a memorial bench in his honor, Valentine said. Donations can be sent to the high school care of the sophomore class.

In addition, Peyton's family has set up a memorial fund at BancorpSouth, with proceeds benefiting Alma Little League baseball. Jackson said Peyton spent "lots and lots of hours" playing Little League and other sports.

"It's hard, but we're going to make it," Jackson said. "(We have) lots of good memories."

To donate to the memorial fund, go to any BancorpSouth location and ask for the Alma Baseball Program Inc. account.

As hinted previously, CSI will be starting off its run this year with a star-studded episode that features Brendan Wayne, the grandson of John Wayne, professional rodeo cowboy Ty Murray, Nicole Sullivan of The King of Queens, country music singer Shooter Jennings and award-winning singer Jewel, who makes a cameo appearance performing the national anthem. In the 11th episode of season 8, Grissom (William Petersen) and his team go to an annual rodeo event in Las Vegas but, they aren't there to watch the bull riding. The team is called to investigate the two murders that took place during the rodeo that may be connected to illegal bull breeding.

The case centers on a crowd-favorite bull rider who attempts to break the record of the previous rider in the competition in order for him to qualify in the final round of the rodeo. Despite enduring chronic pain from years of being thrown, he heads out to the arena but gets thrown on his back in the dirt. To make matters worst, the bull twists around and slams on his neck, prompting the crowd to panic. Medics rush in to help the fallen rider, who eventually gets back on his feet. Unfortunately, he loses his chance for the night as judges signal that there will be no re-ride.

The next day, his lifeless body is found in the middle of the arena with a bottle of booze nearby. At the morgue, the team discovers the cause of his death but also finds out something mysterious about it. Shortly after, more cadavers pile up, including a female victim of a hit and run and a third dead body, who all appear to have some connection with deceased bull rider.

Catch CSI every Thursday at 9pm on CBS.

Time to get job done on rodeo trail

Professional rodeo -- in a departure from previous years -- enters its last month of the regular season this weekend with a series of high-profile rodeos in Canada and the U.S.

Money earned at rodeos starting after Sept. 30 counts toward the 2008 standings. The only exception is the $550,000 Wrangler Tour championship showdown at Dallas on the second weekend of November. It runs up against the $1 million Canadian Finals Rodeo in Edmonton running from Nov. 7 to 11.

Basically, what it means is the cowboys and barrel racers aiming to qualify for the CFR and the December world championships (National Finals Rodeo) at Las Vegas have to get the job done this month.

That could be tough for a guy like Fred Whitfield, the seven-time world calf roping champion from Hockley, Texas. He's never missed the NFR since he turned pro in 1990. But he goes into the Labour Day weekend rodeos 38th in the world standings with just over $27,000 in earnings. That's already $20,000 less than what Oregon veteran Brad Goodrich, who holds down the last (15th) qualifying spot, has won.

Whitfield obviously isn't giving up.

Among all the major rodeos this week like Armstrong, B.C., Ellensburg and Walla Walla in Washington and Filer, Idaho, he's also entered Okotoks for its opening night. It only pays $2,000 an event and it'll be the first time he's ever worked the three-performance rodeo, which starts Friday at 7 p.m.

Whitfield, on the disabled list after January and February surgeries, won't tear himself up if he doesn't qualify for Las Vegas. He's already had an outstanding campaign after winning $112,000 at the Calgary Stampede.

Montana's Hill Sits Seventh

Ever since the CFR was opened up to non-resident contestants, the bull riding has remained a closed shop for the Canadians. Montana's Beau Hill is trying to change that this year. He goes into this weekend's three Canadian rodeos -- the other is at Merritt, B.C. -- seventh in the Canadian standings with $16,357.

That may already be enough to make the CFR cut, but he believes he needs to win another cheque and this will be his last opportunity to do it. He's bound by rule as one of the Professional Bull Riders top 45 guns to compete at all Ford Series events and they resume next week and run right through October.

Outside of scheduling constraints, Hill has a health problem. He sustained a slight left shoulder (riding arm) separation at a Ford Series event last weekend in Chihuahua (Che-wawa), Mexico. He also hyper extended his elbow after getting hung up when a bull fell with him.

"My shoulder doesn't hurt that much, it's my elbow," he explained later. "I've got a bone chip in there and I've been riding with a brace on it all summer.

"I'll ride at Okotoks on Friday and if I can get by with it, I'll go on. If not, I'll have to turn out of the rest and go home."

He's also scheduled to ride at PBR Canada's Glen Keeley Memorial at Stavely on Saturday night.

Schiffner's Hopes Shattered

PBR Canada champion Scott Schiffner was hoping to match a record this year by competing at his ninth CFR.

But that dream was shattered Tuesday night when the sportmedicine people sent him to the disabled list for a month. Schiffner sustained partial tears of the ligaments and bone bruising in his left knee at a bull riding 10 days ago at Coronation. The Strathmore rancher won't have to undergo surgery, but does face a strenuous rehab program to strengthen the knee for Ford Series events and the PBR world finals at Las Vegas in October.

Time off will give him the opportunity to get to know the newest member of the family and learn how to change diapers. Wife Brandy gave birth to seven-pound daughter Maysa on Saturday night.

Branquinho Chases Graves

Calgary's Lee Graves maintained his lead in the world steer wrestling standings last weekend by winning the aggregate at Bremerton, Wash.

It paid $3,386 and bumped the 2005 world champion's total earnings for August to a massive $23,000.

He's won $89,988 this year, but the race for the No. 1 ranking is by no means over. California's 2004 world champion Luke Branquinho is a mere $454 behind going into the Labour Day weekend.

Graves won first at four rodeos in August -- Great Falls, Mont., Canby, Ore., Caldwell, Idaho, and Bremerton.

Indoors in New Zealand

The first indoor rodeo ever staged in New Zealand takes place at Christchurch on Nov. 17. Contestants from the U.S., Canada, Brazil, Australia and New Zealand will be featured.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Express Sports has had a hand in baseball, rodeo, hockey and a long list of other events, and now it will step into sports representation.

Owner Bob Funk announced Tuesday his intentions of purchasing Cowboy Sports Agents, a Yukon-based sports promotion company owned by Mark Nestlen and his wife, Cathy. The deal is expected to close Sept. 12, and the company will be called Express Sports Agency. Financial details were not disclosed.Article Tools Printer friendly edition E-mail this to a friend RSS Feed Digg this history Add to Del.icio.us The company will promote a long list of bull riders. Express Sports Agency will start out with 19 of the most successful bull riders in the business, including two-time Professional Bull Riders World Champion Chris Shiver, and past champs Mike White and Ednei Caminhas.
“I’m extremely excited to have the opportunity to represent the greatest athletes in the entire world,” Funk said. “Express Sports is intent on helping these young men. Our responsibility is to help them earn as much as they can in their career.”
Funk said bull riding is making great strides and so are the riders.
“PBR is one of the fastest-growing sports in the U.S.; it’s grown 44 percent over the past three or four years and is somewhat comparable to NASCAR in its growth,” Funk said. “These are great kids and we want to get the most while they can. Careers don’t last long. It’s a dangerous sport. I’ve been in the cattle business a long time. I know how mean bulls are.”
Funk said Express Sports Agency will attempt to secure sponsors for riders.
“Some of them are making up to $500,000 a year, but their salaries aren’t comparable to other professionals as hockey players or professional basketball players,” Funk said. “These are good kids, rural kids. Not a lot of them go to jail.”
Express will add to its already growing lineup of bull riding events. Express organizes PBR events here and at Tulsa, Nashville, Tenn., and Salt Lake City.
The Express Sports purchase is one of the many changes in PBR. Most notably, the organization was purchased for a reported $95 million in April by Spire Capital Partners.
Mark Nestlen said the Express Sports deal fits right in with the changes.
“With the purchase of the PBR by Spire Capital, the PBR is entering a new stage of growth and so is the representation of the bull riders,” Nestlen said. “The structure and resources that Bob Funk and Express Sports bring to the table provide for that opportunity.”
The Nestlens founded Cowboy Sports Agents 10 years ago and during that time secured $10 million in sponsorship money for performers.

Graves cashes in on long drive
Dwayne Erickson, Calgary Herald
Published: Wednesday, August 22, 2007
Lee Graves had a two-day hole in his itinerary between his first- and second-round steers during last week's opening leg of professional rodeo's Wrangler Tour playoffs.

The Calgary bulldogger didn't sit around Caldwell, Idaho, waiting for the time to pass.

He jumped in his truck and drove to a $140,000 rodeo at Canby, Ore., where he ran two steers in one day before returning to Caldwell.

Font: ****The 24-hour haul was worthwhile.

Graves split fifth on his first steer, won second on his second one and finished first in the aggregate with 8.5 seconds on two for $3,671.

Returning to Caldwell, he turned down his second steer in 4.8 seconds. It was too slow to make money, but combined with his opening-round time of four seconds flat, Graves was fourth best in the aggregate and advanced to the final-day, sudden-death semifinals and finals.

He topped the semifinal with a time of 4.0 and won the final with a run of 3.8 that was greeted with the first standing ovation he's ever received in a rodeo arena.

The $10,396 Caldwell payoff, combined with his Canby earnings, resulted in a $14,067 week, enough to move Graves into the lead in this week's world standings.

The 2005 world champion has won $84,602, nearly $1,400 more than California's Luke Branquinho, the 2004 world champion.

Jule Hazen, from Kansas, who won the $50,000 bonus in March at Houston and the world leader going into last week, dropped to third at $81,905.

This marks the first time the 36-year-old Graves has been on top of the world at this point in the season since 1999, when he ranked No. 1 going into the year-end National Finals Rodeo at Las Vegas.

"In 1999, it just seemed easy, I never thought about it and all of a sudden I was the season leader,'' he said, comparing the two years. "This season has been up and down. I've had some real highs and some real lows. I broke some barriers this year for a lot of money.''

Two weeks ago, on his way to a rodeo at Hermiston, Ore., Graves set a goal of ending the regular-season with more than $100,000. At the time, he had about $70,000 in the bank.

That target is now a whole lot closer to reality.

"This is a real enjoyable time of year because all the good rodeos are pretty close together up here in the northwest (U.S.),'' he said. "We're in Kennewick, Bremerton and Lynden (Wash.) and San Juan Capistrano (Calif.) this week and Armstrong (B.C.), Ellensburg and Walla Walla (Wash.) next week.''

The first full week of September brings Lewiston, Idaho, and the second leg of the Wrangler Tour playoffs at Puyallup, Wash.

Ariat, a footwear and apparel outfit, is the title sponsor for the playoffs and that fits in just right with Graves' program.

"They've sponsored me for the last three years and winning the first leg helped my deal,'' he said. "They used to be involved with rodeo years ago, got out of it and now they're stepping up to the plate big time again.''

Ariat gave him a buckle and vest at Caldwell.

No matter what he does at Puyallup, Graves has earned enough tour money to also advance to the 12-contestant third leg at Omaha, Neb., which basically brings the regular season to a close on the last week of September.
